Here's a little more information about Cape Florida lighthouse. The historic Cape Florida lighthouse is located in Bill Baggs State Park and Recreation Area. The original Cape Florida lighthouse and cottage, built in 1825, were attacked and burned in 1836 by Seminole warriors protesting U.S. presence in the South Florida wilderness and resisting deportation from Florida to the West. When the Cape Florida lighthouse was rebuilt in 1855-1856, it was extended from 65 feet to its present height, and wooden stairs were replaced with 119 spiraling iron steps to the top.

The Old Port Boca Grande Lighthouse is located on the southern tip of Gasparilla Island. In 1888, Congress appropriated $35,000 to build the Old Port Boca Grande lighthouse to guard the entrance to Charlotte Harbor. In 1980, the Old Boca Grande lighthouse was placed in the National Register of Historic Places. In 1986, through concerted efforts, the Old Boca Grande lighthouse was restored and once more became an aid to navigation.

In 1883, after many years and many attempts at having a lighthouse built on Sanibel Island; Congress appropriated $50, 000 for the building. The Sanibel Island lighthouse was constructed in a metal factory in New Jersey, and then loaded onto a ship headed to Sanibel. However, the construction of the tower was delayed when the ship carrying the structure became grounded not far from the Sanibel Island, causing it and the lighthouse to sink to the bottom of the gulf. Crews from Key West took on the task of recovering the lighthouse and construction finally got under way. The Sanibel Island lighthouse is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is still an active aid to navigation.
