Here's a little more information about the Cape Hatteras lighthouse. The Cape Hatteras lighthouse has an interesting story. As a child, founding father Alexander Hamilton, the nation's first Secretary of Treasury, was traveling around Cape Hatteras in a ship. Hamilton became very sick, and afraid because the ship he was riding in was traveling through a storm and there was no light outside. Hamilton vowed, if he ever amounted to anything, he would see to it a lighthouse was built at Cape Hatteras. In 1802, Hamilton fulfilled his promise, and the Cape Hatteras lighthouse was built in 1802. Unfortunately the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse you see today is not the original. The lighthouse had to be rebuilt in 1869 after excessive erosion ruined the original.
