Globes, although they are slightly flawed, are the most accurate representations of the Earth. A lot of us were taught in school that everyone thought the Earth was flat until Christopher Columbus set sail for India. That isn't actually true. In Columbus 's time most people knew the Earth was a globe. They were just afraid of uncharted waters, thinking sea monsters or other creatures would attack their ships.
It is believed that the first globe was constructed around 200 B.C. in Greece. The first modern globes were made by Leonardo da Vinci and Martin Behaim, shortly after America was "discovered." The New York public library has a globe from 1506 currently on display.
